This Cocktail Will Wet Your Whistle...
The King of Cocktails - The Mai Tai
There are many variations of this drink, but the original has always been the best. It originated with Trader Vic and Donn The Beachcomber back around 1944 during the birth of the Tiki craze. They knew what the heck they were doing and their traditional one is and will always be the best. The Mai Tai at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (the first place to serve the Mai Tai in Hawaii) is hard to beat…plus the atmosphere is second-to-none. So let’s get there at home or on the beach…
Our Islands To Highlands Small Spin On The Original
We added a little of our flare without compromising the original. Here’s the one we make when feeling the Aloha Spirit.
Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Aged White Rum (we only use Flora De Cana 4 Year White Rum because it’s the best!)
1.5 oz. Aged Dark Rum (we like Flora De Cana 12 Year, El Dorado 15 Year, or Zaya 12 Year Rum)
.5 oz. Cointreau (you can also use Gran Marnier or Orange Curacao)
.25 oz. Orgeat
.5 oz. Simple Syrup (so simple to make your own and use cane sugar)
1.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
Big dash of Angostura Bitters
Allspice Dram (to use as the floater on top)
How To Make It:
Completely fill cocktail shaker with cubed ice and then add all ingredients
Cover and shake the livin’ hell out of it!!!
Strain ingredients into a cool Tiki cocktail glass filled with crushed ice
Lightly float the top with Allspice Dram (or use a dark aged rum)
Garnish with a Sprig of Mint and/or Lime Wheel along with a Fresh Wedge of Pineapple (if you are lucky to have them in your arsenal)
Add a lovely mermaid, a swizzle stick and a straw to your drink and you’re now ready to sing to The Lady Pacific!
Note: Don’t worry about having the correct rums, liqueurs, garnishes, etc. Get as close as you can get because it will still taste like paradise. It’s more about the love you put into it. Also, double the ingredients for a larger Mai Tai so you don't have to keep getting up and out of your hammock.
BTW, Mai Tai (maitaʻ) is a Tahitian word meaning “good” which was supposedly exclaimed by the first person to taste this drink.
