Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time! It was written by the famous French science fiction author, Jules Verne back in 1869 and it was way ahead of its time. The illustrations that accompanied the book helped to make it jump off the page. We all know about the story of Captain Nemo and his underwater ship the Nautilus (the terrifying sea monster). It’s about his quest for scientific knowledge and a desire to escape terrestrial civilization. At first you are terrorized by the sea monster and then you realize that the Nautilus is an underwater ship (a precursor to the modern submarine) and that its crew can do wonderous things underwater that we have never seen before. This brilliant vision of the future and what could be done in the seas had a huge effect on modern oceanography and gave us an appetite for adventures on the high seas. The 1954 movie with James Mason, Kirk Douglass and Peter Lorre brought a lot of the novel to life on a much grander scale. It scared the you-know-what out of kids who already grew up with the book. If you haven’t read or seen 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, ya better get moving! Read the book, watch the flick and you’ll thank me.
