Baaaaallllliiiii Haaaaaiiiii... Yes, we all know the old Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific" and know that Bai Ha'i is a fictional place. Author James A. Michener described Bali Ha'i in "Tales of the South Pacific" in 1946 and it was the inspiration for the musical that came later. However, the big scene was actually filmed on the north shore of Kauaʻi and Mount Makana was used as Bali Ha'i...and is still known as Bali Ha'i today. The view from Tunnels Beach is the best---the aqua blue water washing up onto the white sandy beach with overhanging palm trees is surreal. This place, both the real and the fictional, brings up all kinds of romantic visions of the old south sea islands. I wanted this piece to have a look of something that an old, crusty sailor might have picked up on his travels around the islands. The Large Turquoise Jasper Bead has a color of those aqua blue waters and the Black Lava Rock resemble the craggy mountains (the Lava Rock is NOT from Hawaii Brah so no worries!) and the Carved Horn Beads have a very South Polynesian look & feel to them. I added the Large Bone Mala Skull to represent Bloody Mary who sings that oh-so-alluring song. I dig this piece and hope it lives up to the name. Sing it...ya know you want to.
