Captain Brook's Beach Bar (Tavern) on the Midway Atoll was constructed in 1997 by the Midway Phoenix Corporation as a part of a public visitation program for Midway Atoll. In 2002, it was taken over by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife and now used as a gathering place on island. Yeah, it's that same Midway out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that had that huge WW2 battle which was pivotal in world history. Midway was discovered in 1859 by Captain N.C. Brooks and then the U.S. claimed the inhabited islands shortly thereafter (2 islands make up the atoll). During the 1930's is was a big stop of the Flying Air Clippers which gave it some notoriety and romance. After WW2, Midway Island became a wildlife refuge which is now home to numerous bird species and marine life. It really is a spec on a map, but a spec that is significant for both human and ecological history. Today, only a small number of contractors, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service people and a few aircraft passengers inhabit the island...and get to enjoy one of the most isolate beach bars in the world! Lucky them! Its decor is quite pleasing---from the French windows to the long, dark wooden bar to the turquoise and white paint job, it blends easily into its natural surroundings. Not bad for being in such an isolated place and some mainland bars could take a lesson or two from it. But the view from the entire bar...aiyiyi...this is what it’s all about. That crystal clear, aqua blue water on the white sandy beach is heaven. What else do you need, except a bracelet that takes you right here---at least in your dreams! It’s made with Large Puka Shell, Aqua Blue Recycled Glass and Coconut Wood. What's more island than that! Throw in a Keyhole Limpet Shell for a tie-in to the sea and some Hand-Carved Water Buffalo Bone for a little local flare and there ya go. The Big Skull pays homage to Captain Brook...the first to lay eyes on this beautiful bunch of sand. Getting out to Midway is worth doing and when in Rome...ya gotta go to the one joint with the juice eh? Man, a fruity rum cocktail is sounding pretty good right now.
