The Penghu or Pescadores Islands are an archipelago of 90 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait about 30 miles west of the main island of Taiwan (across the Penghu Channel). They cover an area of about 55 square miles and are governed by China. Not a lot of people know about these islands even though tourism is one of their main sources of income. And you know why when you get there. It's like being in the Caribbean with their white, sandy beaches and their warm and humid sub-tropical climate. The columnar basalt landscape on many of the volcanic islands looks like something out of the old King Kong movies. Lots of Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, European histories abound in this area going back to the 9th and 10th centuries and territorial disputes are still going on today. Starting to sound like an encyclopedia now, so let's focus on the bracelet. The green and aqua colors in the Large Amazonite Beads are awesome and resemble many of the green forage colors in the interior of the islands. The Seafoam Green African Ashanti Glass beads have the appearance of some of the coastal ring colors around the islands and the Wood and Hand-Carved Water Buffalo Beads give this bracelet an organic feel with an Eastern flare. The Antique Asian Coin (sorry I do not know the country origin) is a shout-out to the crazy history of the place. Not knowing the origin of the coin kinda gets into the territorial dispute thing eh? The really cool Wood Mala Skull is a shout-out to the fishermen of the islands who are still working the seas. BTW, the word Pescadores in Portuguese means "Fishermen Islands."
