Most of us know the story of the famous Austrian Mountaineer, Heinrich Harrer, who wrote a travel book on his Tibetan adventures between 1944 and 1951---prior to Tibet losing its independence. The book covers his escape from a British internment camp in India with his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter, their journey across Tibet to Lhasa (the capital) where they spent several years, and how he became a tutor and friend of the 14th Dalai Lama. His book, 'Seven Years In Tibet' introduced many of us to Tibetan culture as we know it. What an amazing adventure! I could go on and on, but you can go explore more on the subject yourself. We want to get to this bracelet don't we? I really love the look and feel of this bracelet---cool colors and it does look very old world. This piece looks like something you would have picked up in Lhasa in an old curio shop. It's made with Mint Green Ashanti Beads and the Aged Hand-Carved & Smooth Yak Bone add to its antiquity. The Large Dyed Bone Bead is actually from that area which does add to its authenticity. I added an Antique Asian Coin as something that an old artisan may have used for a piece such as this back in the day (sorry I do not know country of origin). Regional artisans would use materials they had available to them at the time. Perhaps this was a traded coin from another weary traveler? The Bone Mala Skull represents Heinrich’s physical and personal journey during that stretch of time. What a contribution he made to world travel and the adventure spirit. I can't imagine what he would have done if he had spent seven more years there. See what I just did?
