The Man Who Would Be King is a short story by Rudyard Kipling in 1895 about two British adventurers in India who set off for fame and fortune and later become kings of Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan. It's the one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. In 1975, John Huston made it into a movie that stared Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Chrsitopher Plummer and Saeed Jaffrey. It's an epic! The story, the scenery, the action, the music and the acting are as good as it gets. It literally is a swashbuckling tale about two guys who have a zest for life and want to take a piece of the world for themselves and do it in their own way. Little do they know that they are following the path of Alexander The Great. They could care less about the consequences of undertaking such a feat and just steam forward. Ya gotta love it! I could go on and on about the book and movie, but you need to read it/see the film for yourself. For the ones who already have, you will know what this bracelet is all about. This piece was made to look like something that was possibly made in Kafiristan at that time. The Large Aged Bone Bead, the Hand-Carved Yak Horn, the Water Buffalo Beads and Crocodile Wood give this some authentic antiquity and earthiness (many of these beads come from that area). The 1950's Era Japanese Cherry Glass Beads add a little pop to the piece and represent some of the jewels that were found in the great temple. There are 2 Large Bone Mala Skulls (also from this part of the world) that represent our 2 main characters. They represent Daniel Dravot (Connery) and Peachey Tolliver Carnehan (Caine) putting their heads together to come up with a crazy scheme as this. The Small Bone Mala Skull pays homage to Billy Fish (Jaffrey) who was their loyal soldier servant ‘till the end. I loved making this piece and hope it captures the adventurous spirit of Kipling's story. Great adventure in life is what makes us happy. Now I must go...I have to meet a man in Marwar Junction.
